Mac App Store apps crashing on start-up (once again)? Here's the fix

22 February 2016, 04:20

Over recent days certain apps on my computer have refused to start. Typically the icon appears in the Dock, then the app terminates instantly. It took me a while to realise the apps concerned came via the Mac App Store, and that this was – yet another – certificate issue. I’ve no idea what’s gone wrong this time but this issue ain’t new.

A bit of Googling lead me to a solution, and here it is:

  1. Try restarting your Mac; and if that doesn’t work
  2. Uninstall the errant app by dragging it to the Trash, and then reinstall it via the Mac App Store.

I’d add that you should ensure the time and date is set correctly on your Mac, via the Date & Time icon in System Preferences. It usually is correct, and set automatically via a time server, but it’s worth checking.

Nice and simple. If you’re starting to think it might be worth avoiding the Mac App Store then, well, you’re not alone.

Oh for the good old days when “it just works”
